A BRIEF HISTORY OF BARBERIA

Established in 2011, when the founders first met and shared their common interest in the the barber culture. The encounter led to the idea of rediscovering the art of barbering in a new exciting form of barbershop. Its aspiration was to bring the refinement of the past glory as during that time, the barbershop business remained one of the last vestiges for masculine refuge in the metrosexual and androgynous social frame. It was increasingly challenging to find a genuine place for gentlemen that could do simple and straightforward trims and shaves that could also completely understand their needs. The grooming industry was very much predominated by typical hair salons with products that, for the most part, were more skewed toward ladies’ needs only. And what’s more, due to the lack of improvements and innovations in most barbershops at the time, the name barbershop had a negative impression. It was associated with a poor-quality, unsanitary grooming place that only catered for low-classmen only. Despite its challenges, there were many gentlemen out there yearning for such an exclusive domain that was able to provide the very best in men’s grooming experience and craftsmanship. A place that manifests a true gentleman and welcomes a genuine camaraderie.

Consequently, a premium barber concept was created and BARBERIA’s first barbershop-cum-sensorium outlet was opened in Grand Indonesia in 2013. The brand has always been focused on providing excellent quality and standards of grooming ever since. Gradually, it branched out to Senayan City, Plaza Indonesia, PIK Avenue,  and established a partnership to open its first luxury grooming parlor with The Langham Jakarta. BARBERIA is reaching even greater heights, extending its business to Bali and creating a luxurious grooming experience that's open to all. This expansion includes a new grooming parlour at Mandapa, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Ubud, as well as a barbershop in Pantai Berawa, Canggu. In addition to these exciting developments, BARBERIA looks forward to opening another luxury grooming establishment at Suvarna Jakarta Golf Club, specifically catering to golfers in September 2024. BARBERIA INDONESIA currently has a total of 26 barbers and 22 members of staff.

As the groundbreaker in reviving the best of the old barber tradition with cutting-edge refinements, BARBERIA frequently engages in some activities and collaborations to exchange knowledges and make collective progress. We always believe that our source of inspiration is in the heritage but the the motto is about looking forward.
BARBERIA has played a part in Plaza Indonesia’s Men Fashion Week 2014 Exhibition, Plaza Indonesia’s Future Shaper and Shakers 2016, IDEAFEST 2016 and a collaborative event with Michelin-starred TOM’S by Tom Aikens & DAMAN, bringing a Gentlemen Evening program. 

JAKARTA BARBER SHOWCASE

In line with the development of barber industry in Indonesia, we were in need of proper standardisation of barber as profession. Aside from maintaining our unique heritage, our byword is always about looking forward. In that spirit, we believed we needed a movement to equalize barber as profession in Indonesia with expert barbers from others. For this reason, BARBERIA collaborated with well-known global pomade brand; Layrite and the most prestigious and iconic mall; Plaza Indonesia, to hold Jakarta Barber Showcase in 2016. 


We were bringing three renowned world-class barbers: Donny Hawley (founder of Layrite), Carlos Ramos a.k.a Sugarskulls, and Julius Cvesar who have extensive experiences in the quintessential art of barbering, handling notable personalities such as Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Hugh Hefner, Billie Joe Armstrong, Johnny Knoxfille, Jared Leto and NBA players to name a few. It was a successful one week event full with seminars, workshops, and trainings; joined by many barbers across the country and also from Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei.

BARBERIA had the honor of being appointed as the personal barber for His Excellency, Mr. Joko Widodo, former President of the Republic of Indonesia. Our trusted relationship began during his tenure as Governor and continued through his presidency. The recognition earned by our expertly trained and experienced barbers has since led to the ongoing privilege of serving members of the First Family, ministers, government and military officials, foreign emissaries, and many other distinguished individuals who continue to seek the finest in grooming and craftsmanship. We were also entrusted to groom a few heads of state and international delegates during major events such as the G20 Summit and ASEAN meetings.​

After years of study, research and development, we finally expanded our keen interest in mens’ grooming by launching our first premium hair styling products under the brand named 1925 GROOMING CO. in December 2019. Having years of experience in the grooming industry, we are fully aware of the significant growth and evolving trend in men’s grooming & lifestyle. The barbershops are popping up faster than ever across the country and the rising demands of various men’s grooming products. Despite of the wide spectrum of possibilities that the evolution of this industry has opened, we notice that many new products that currently available in the market are yet still not adequate for many male consumers. The male grooming space is still a vast territory. With still so much room for both refinement and innovation, the discerning male audience is certainly expecting more and ready to move beyond basic grooming. For this reason, 1925 GROOMING CO. was put in place to cater for those men who live their lives in style. A curation of premium high- performance grooming & lifestyle essentials for modern gentlemen who care about routines and rituals. 

Today, the brand has launched 3 types of hair styling products, a deep-cleansing beard & body bar, a post-shave alum bar and 22 aromatic candles, 1 sculptural candle, 6 fog incense cones, 6 aromatic incense sticks and developing more products to come.
The brand was selected as one of the winners of best logo design among nearly 40,000 logos by LogoLounge in 2020, a testament to our rigorous exploration and determination in building the perfect brand identity for our products. The work was featured in the LogoLounge Book 11 and reviewed in the world’s leading progressive business media site, Fast Company.

SPEAKEASY: BARBERSHOP
A COLLABORATION WITH LOEWY JAKARTA

On Friday, 13 September 2024, Barberia and Loewy Jakarta came together for an exclusive, one-night-only event, SPEAKEASY: BARBERSHOP. In this unique collaboration, Loewy was transformed into a classic speakeasy, accessible only through a hidden passage via Barberia Barbershop. The invitation-only event required guests to use a secret password to gain entry, adding to the intrigue and exclusivity of the evening. The event featured Barberia's signature grooming services, offering razor shaves and trims, while Loewy’s guests enjoyed handcrafted cocktails by Keisuke Yamamoto from Bees Knees Kyoto. The night was brought to life with live jazz-funk music performed by Fankestra, featuring Teza Sumendra, Kenny Gabriel, and Rafi Muhammad, alongside DJ Amahl.
SPEAKEASY: BARBERSHOP was a testament to the seamless fusion of luxury grooming, exceptional mixology, and vibrant live music, offering an unforgettable experience in the heart of Jakarta.
